I would have been shocked if they allowed commenting!
Dont intend defending bbc. But in this case they're probably right.
People seem to be very angry and start hurling abuse at each other instead of debating like rational human beings. Too much bottled up anger.
For instance, here in your blog, if I ask genuine questions like what this celebration was all about? why people have so much issue with just a celebration? and so on , do I get an answer or just a few angry dislikes like I got to my question in your previous blog?
Celeberation had several dimensions: Number one to honor and rememebr Iranian history through the ages, let's call it a simple step to recoginition and resurrection of Iranian identitiy. Number two: using that event as an excuses large number of infrastructure development projects came into existance (same concept as when countries use Olympique events to fix and develope their infrastructure) Number three: To reintroduce Iran to the world as a Unique country with history and civilization to boost trade and tourism , call it marketing at grand scale (Same method is used by many countries now such as UAE and others to market themseleves in a competitive world we live in)
People who have issues with this event are mainly Islamo + communist crowd whose ideology pretty much is against all that above.
Thank you MRX .
I dont understand why anyone should have any issues with such an event as you described.
Well Ben, ideally no one should! but as it relates to this celeberation here are/were two issues with it:
1) Islamo , communists ideology of hating anything assoicated with the concept of Iran, and poettnial resurection of true Iran. In fact it is interesting that while these two groups are ideolocially far apart , when it comes to suppressing Iranian identity , they have no issues jumping in bed together!
2) General ignorance and backwardness of the society. Now I know people hate me for saying it but here we go: You can take the horse to the water but you can't force the horse to drink from it!
MRX's first point is correct. Also, the western press believed that the Iranian people were so desperate and poor that any kind of celebration of that nature was seen as an affront to their sensibilities.
It was a form of Orientalism and disguised racism among the left. Like today, they thought that Iranians were naturally conservative and religious people who simply wanted to wear hejab and attend mosque while 'evil imperialists' were 'disrespecting' Iranian culture by pushing for things like women's rights.
The current Chess championship and the issue of hejab is an example of this 'left' racism.
Arvand
Great observation and that is among many reasons I no longer listern to leftists and their moonbat counterparts the liberal idiots.
Thats why I don't base my beliefs on the ideology of the left or the right but on national interests instead. Once you do that things become much clearer in terms of separating the nonsense and propaganda from the real story underneath.
it is the same for all videos, not just this one. Stay away from paranoia! :)
