June 2021

In this video, Dr. Roger Matthews and Dr. Amy Richardson are talking about the trajectory of writing and language change through Iran’s past from Neolithic numeracy to the Achaemenid Period texts.

Professor Matthews joined the Department of Archaeology at the University of Reading in January 2011, after ten years at UCL Institute of Archaeology. From 1988 to 1995, he was Director of the British School of Archaeology in Iraq, and from 1996 to 2001 he was Director of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara.

Dr. Richardson is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Reading on the ERC-funded MENTICA project, working with Prof Roger Matthews and Dr Wendy Matthews on integrated community approaches to the Middle East Neolithic transition. Working at new sites in Iraq and Iran spanning the Epipalaeolithic to the Early Neolithic, Amy is primarily responsible for coordinating field recording methods and managing data flow to conduct network analysis on the results of the investigations.
