Mehranghiz Kar was interviewed by TV host Kambiz Hosseini ( Poletik Episode 31) during which she said that she supported President Rohani's foreign policy (as opposed to his domestic policies) but she dismissed the assessment that many people in Iran necessarily approve of public executions which have surged under the current administration despite it's promises of reform including in regard to human rights.

She claims that most people in Iran actually are more aspired by the Western Models of Democracy than what they observe in the current countries facing the so called Arab Spring. Additionally she concludes that people in Iran may most probably react forcefully against the Regime like in Ukraine today if political dissent and social and economic disparity surges in the months to come.

Wishful thinking ? Maybe mabye Not  ...

It would indeed be an error to boil down an entire population to a minor few who may indeed approve of such public hangings and even participate in them.

However what appears as less convincing in her response is when as an excuse she claims that people also would gather around on a plaza called "meidaneh Edam" ( is she confusing with meidaneh Toupkhaneh ?) in Tehran to observe public executions during the Pahlavi Era.

TO WATCH GO HERE (Move to 24 min approximately)

To my Knowledge if the Pahlavis did not put an end to capital punishment be them for ordinary crimes ( as is practiced in certain states in the US) and less justifiably for political dissent (on which I have even blogged about as in  here) , they nevertheless did not reinstate what their Qajar Predecessors would carry out in public and which has become a common practice under the current theocracy.

If I may have missed something, Mrs. Kar and her aficianados are more than welcome to enlighten us on her assessment that Public executions were indeed carried out under the Pahlavi juridiction.
