A Cougar in Eugene
In this big forest
There is a hidden cougar
Whom I recognized
In a morning walk.
Many times I stopped walking
To hear his footsteps
And every now and then
I turned my head around
Lest he takes me by surprise
Under a shady tree.
And suddenly
I saw his tawny skin
And open red mouth
Showing his white teeth
Behind an old oak tree.
I could neither run
Nor stop walking.
The smell of his body
Had mingled with mine.
I lowered my gaze
And without looking at his shadow
Walked away swiftly.
I knew if I pass a bend
I would reach a pond where loggers
Had abandoned their crane.
There
I leaned against my walking stick
And gazed at that long-necked crane
Which the morning dew
Was still shining on its yellow skin
And asked myself:
“At night
When the cougar comes to the pond
Does he also stare
At this iron monster
Which is slowly rusting
In the forest’s damp
And, as Walt Whitman says,
Is being covered
By “leaves of grass”?”
From afar
There came the call of a black-capped chickadee
Who was sitting on a Douglas-fir
And singing in Cuckoo scale.
I sat on the iron platform
And returned to the Khoshamian Forest
Near the Caspian Sea.
We used to go there in summer
And every morning before breakfast
We went out from our red villa
With our father for a walk.
Our footsteps mingled together
And there was no cougar
Hiding under shady trees.
The earth and sky,
As Golchin Gilani said,*
Were shining with “ample jewels”
And the rain clensed everything
Even our footprints
…..
But suddenly
I heard the sound of his leap
Among dense trees.
I jumped and without taking my stick
Rushed toward the building
Where my little son
Had just woken up
Watching the three guard dogs
From our bedroom’s window.
I wish
I had brought one of them
With me.
